Bloch on Job's Piety

Job...would never have been so ready [as Abraham] to sacrifice his son. For him, piety was not to be confused with conformity to law and order. (Ernst Bloch, Atheism in Christianity , 19; trans. Swann) Indeed, Job is (or can be) a very radical book, questioning traditional forms of piety, wisdom, and prophetic revelation all as insufficient.
