Mourning the Loss of Catherine Bell

I just learned from Jim Davila at Paleojudaica that Catherine Bell, one of the world's leading scholars in ritual studies and Chinese religions, died at the young age of 55 on May 23, 2008 after a long illness. I remember bumping into her at a party at the annual meeting of AAR/SBL in San Antonio a few years ago. She taught at Santa Clara and retired last year due to her illness. She is best known in religious studies for her 1992 book, "Ritual Theory, Ritual Practice," which in 1994 won the American Academy of Religion book award in History of Religions.

How tragic! I have always thought that "Ritual Theory, Ritual Practice" was one of the smartest books on ritual ever written. I always hoped she get back to more theoretical endeavors. I met her in Chicago when I arranged a lecture for her at the Divinity School right RT/RP came out. She was a lovely person and a loss to the academy.

I haven't read the book in perhaps almost five years, but I probably should return to it soon, since I think some of my research will be turning toward ritual issues more than I had originally anticipated.

Quirky Christology: Theophilus of Antioch and the Logos' Preincarnate Peformance

Book Note: Peter Schaefer's _Jesus in the Talmud_

I just finished reading Peter Schafer's new book, Jesus in the Talmud . Previous discussions on this theme have revolved around whether or not the rare appearances of Jesus in Rabbinic literature can contribute to our understanding of the "historical Jesus." Notable in this respect is the highly erudite and ultimately fruitless study by Johann Maier entitled, Jesus von Nazareth in der talmudischen Ueberlieferung . Schaefer seeks to move beyond such questions and discuss why Jesus is portrayed the way he is in the Talmud (basically, and to no one's surprise, in a very negative light). His thesis is that the Talmud's occasional discussions of Jesus--when Jesus usually is NOT the primary topic under discussion, but is merely used as an example for another point--provides a "devastating counternarrative" to the gospels.
